Still Getting Bitter, Uneven Espresso Shots Every Morning?

The culprit is almost always an uneven tamp. When the puck isn't level, water finds the path of least resistance — leading to channeling, sour spots, and wasted coffee.

Meet the LuxHaus 58mm Calibrated Level Tamper

Engineered with a precision spring-loaded mechanism and a 100% flat stainless steel base, the LuxHaus tamper guarantees the same pressure and level puck every time — no skill required, no guesswork involved.

Better than expected, but...

I read the worst reviews before ordering, and almost certain that I will be returning it, but I thought gonna give it a try.The packaging is pretty fancy, from outside it also looks like a high-end product. It is heavy (almost 1 pound), it tamps coffee basically just by sitting on it :D The handle is not wobbling, like someone complained, it is nice and sturdy. The diameter is exactly 53mm, so it fits the Breville Barista Express basket even better than the original tamper which is slightly smaller (52.66mm), virtually no gap left between the tamper and basket wall, I even get clean sides of the basket after tamping. So it is already much better than the original tamper. But now, the thing what it is designed for - the calibrated 30lbs pressure. It would be nice that the spring would move gradually, and you would hear a click or something (like a nice automotive torque wrench), or maybe 30 pounds would be when it reaches the bottom, but NO. The handle does not move at all till you reach "about" 30 lbs, and then suddenly it drops about a quarter of an inch, nearly silently, sometimes you can hear it sometimes not so much, but you should feel, and after that point you can easily reach 50 lbs. It does make a louder noise when you release it.So you can tell that you did tamp it with at least 30 lb, but maybe it was 45, who knows.I'd give it like 4.5 stars, but since that not an option, it gets only 4. Maybe it is calibrated to something, but you can't tell much about the exact pressure anyway. But better than nothing though. (I did test it on Withings bathroom scale)I'll keep it I think, it will begin my tampers collection :)

Very pleased!

This calibrated tamper works like a charm & has made a noticeable improvement in the consistency of my shots. The tamper is attractive, hefty, well-made & reasonably priced. It fits perfectly in my Gaggia Factory 106 manual lever espresso machine's 51mm single and double baskets. (The Gaggia Factory 106 was essentially a limited edition, rebadged version of the still-made and much more commonly found La Pavoni Millennium.)BTW, with respect to the pressure accuracy issue... I can't especially vouch of my decidedly non-laboratory test methodology. Such as it was, however,it consisted of using our bathroom digital scale (with, of course a clean folded-over paper towel between the tamper and scale for sanitary purposes! ;-) ). I then pressed the tamper down on the scale just to the tamper's fully depressed position and then held it there in place until the scale readout registered, without noticeably increasing the pressure beyond that needed just to hold the tamper in place in its fully depressed position. I repeated this three times and got readings of 27.9 lbs, 33.1 lbs & 29.6 lbs, respectively. To me, those readings seem reasonably close to 30 lbs...

Great product, room for improvement...

I got this Tamper, so I could get consistent shots, but like a few people who have noticed here, this is calibrated for 50lb when I tested it and not 30lb. I understand people say consistency is the key (even at 50lb), but in order to achieve that I would have had to change my bean grind to a much coarser setting, and I like the way it was set now. I just wanted something that would let me know when I'd get to the 20-30lb range. There are people here who have opened the device to cut the spring but there is an easier solution, which is to buy several washers from home depot and as you can see in the picture, I set them in the middle section, so when you press the tamp it goes half way more or less to get the ideal tamp. This way I got the tamp to exactly 30 lb as I was looking for.Obviously there is room for improvement in that department but it's a solid tamp, it's well designed, and the support team is very courteous and responsive. I gave them several feedbacks if they choose to update this design and they were very welcoming of those inputs, also they have a nice ebook barista manual available at their site which is a plus!Overall pleased with this tamp!

Great quality

Really impressed with the quality of this tamper. The calibrated pressure makes my espresso shots much more consistent, and it feels sturdy and well-made compared to cheaper options. It’s simple, effective, and honestly made a noticeable difference in my workflow and extraction. Definitely a solid upgrade for any home espresso setup.

Actually, it takes marginal effort to press down & tamper your coffee. Right balance and weight with a quality feel.

Better than I expected

This tamper is a beast, it came with a nice travel pouch and also a card to direct you to a nice how did coffee originate booklet digital manual, this tamper covered every space my cheap plastic tamper was missing causing channeling.

It takes some real force to push the tamper down to bottom out the spring.

This is a total game changer. If your shots are coming out watery, no creme, flowing too fast this piece of equipment will eliminate those problems, at least for me it did. I should have bought one of these 5 years ago.

What does "calibrated" mean here?

Nice solid expresso tamper, and the perfect size for the Breville Barista Express machine. If you're the kind of person who always overdoes it with tamping pressure, and worries that you're not pushing hard enough (like me), then this is a great way of forcing yourself to ease up. My shoulder feels better already! Much nicer and more comfortable to use than the lightweight tamper that comes with the Breville machine. My only issue with this really is that they call it a "calibrated" tamper, but then conspicuously fail to mention what pressure it is calibrated to. In fact, in the FAQ on the manufacturer's page, they answer the question "Is this a 30lb tamper?" with some waffle about how it's more important to get a consistent tamp than a specific number. So, I did some experiments with a bathroom scale, and found that the spring starts to yield at about 35lbs pressure, and bottoms out at about 40lbs pressure. So, if you push till you feel the spring start to give, you're getting 35-40lbs pressure. Personally I think this is about right, ensuring that there are no significant voids in your coffee puck, while also being a force that's relatively easy on the arm.

Quality tool

Heavy quality made the website explanation says it is calibrated but not to a set torque amount I find that explanation odd because to calibrate something you have to have an objective point to calibrate it too? Maybe I'm wrong I'm not an engineer. Was looking to learn something I don't know from information sent with it however there is none so I went to the website that a card had on it that came with it and no surprise error 404 page does not exist and it takes you straight to the online store.. this appears to do what it is supposed to again it's a quality piece of work I'm just one that likes fit and finish for what I buy before I'm urged to buy more..

Not as great as I’d hoped…

**Edited to add an extra star. After my original review the company reached out and offered a full refund. This showed integrity, so they get an extra star from me.**It came pretty well packaged. Like in one of those boxes you don’t want to throw away. It seems to be very sturdy and well made and when I successfully use it I feel my coffee is tamped down correctly and I get consistent shots…But the thing that’s keeping me from giving full stars is that it’s harder to use than it looks like. Maybe it’s just mine, but I feel like I have to fight to get it to push down. I’ve actually had several occurrences where my portafilter slipped and tipped over under the strain of my effort and spilled my grounds everywhere. I do realize having a tamping station would help, but I never had this issue when using the basic tamper that came with my machine. I thought maybe I’m just weak and had my very fit husband try and he agreed it seemed weird to need to use that much force.I really tried to love it, I really did. I’m even outside the window for returns because I was really trying to make it work.

quality piece and awesome customer service

I first purchased the tamper through Amazon and was sent a used item. The seal on the box was broken and there looked to be some coffee grounds between the metal portion of the tamp and the handle. There was a card in the box that said to reach out directly to LuxHaus if there were any issues, so I did. After a few photos and emails were exchanged, the people over at LuxHaus (Stefan, specifically) ended up sending me a brand new tamper. The customer service alone deserves 5 stars. As for the tamp itself - it feels quality; has a nice weight to it and there's nothing loose or rattling around. I can't say for sure it's calibrated exactly as it's tough to gauge that by trying to use the electronic body scale I have, however, it does feel about right. All I know is that now I have a consistent way to tamp my espresso and anything that helps a newbie like me remove as many variables as possible is appreciated. Will it immediately improve your shots? No, but tamping now is a consistent process for me and I can adjust my grind accordingly since I know I'm using the same force tamping now. I definitely recommend this for anyone who's just getting started.

Sturdy, solid, perfect fit

I looked at many other tampers before buying this one a week ago. I am glad I did. Though I was a little slowed to buy due to the price, I ultimately decided to try it. I read a lot of reviews of the cheaper ones about flaking metal, and plastic, sizing issues, etc., and I wanted something that was sturdy and long lasting. It has the right amount of heft to it that tells me that the tamper is solid steel. The handle seems sturdy enough for the job. I really like the calibration aspect because the spring "tells" me to stop tamping at the right weight. (Tip I read: hold it like a flashlight) I ordered a 51 mm and it was spot on. I have a DeLonghi machine, middle of the line, and wanted to get the most out of it. Since I am not a barista, and prior to last Christmas, I was not a daily espresso drinker either, however, I knew what taste I wanted out of it and have been trying everything to make the best (imho) espresso since it's the only coffee I have all day. It takes a lot of guess work out of it.Update: 6 years later, still going strong! Highly recommend

Works well for my two Breville Machines

I recommend this to those looking for a cost effective calibrated tamper. I have purchased both a 51mm (Breville BES 830XL) and a 53.5mm (Breville Bambino Plus) tamper for my two Breville espresso machines and the both perform perfectly.Finding 3rd-party accessories for the BES 830 XL is extremely difficult. Breville's spec for the portafilter basket is 50mm, but I found that is at the bottom. The top 1/2 is just a bit over at 51mm and the 51mm LuxHaus fits perfectly to a normal tamp depth of 5/8" as Breville recommends for tamped head space at the top of the basket. The specs for the Bambino Plus state the portafilter basket is 54mm. Again, the 53mm LuxHaus fits perfectly to a normal tamp depth of 5/8" for head space at the top of the basket even when I do my finish tamp after I have trimmed it using their "Razor" tool. These tampers a well constructed with a solid feel and are easy to grip. It would be nice if there was a tactile "click" when you hit the calibrated pressure, but I have quickly gotten the feel for using them. I measured both to be abbot 32 pounds of pressure which does exceed the recommendation for 30 lbs.; but, its consistency that counts...not the exact pressure :)

You want this tool.

For literally decades I have made myself a cappuccino or two in the morning. After grinding the beans I used a solid metal tamper to compress the grind in the filter. It became such an enjoyable ritual that I took my espresso machine, grinder and tamper with me on summer trips. In July I managed to misplace the tamper and arrived home without it. I improvised for a few days but nothing works like a properly sized hefty tamper so I pulled up Amazon and chanced upon this calibrated pressure tamper. I didn’t know why I needed “calibrated pressure” but decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It turns out that correct and consistent compression of the grind actually makes a big difference - my cappuccinos are better than ever. This tamper is well made, just feels right in my hand, and takes the guesswork out of how hard to press the grind. If you make espresso you want this tool. LuxHaus gets 5 stars for the product, the price, and for following up after my order to inquire as to my satisfaction. Good folks.

Does the job quite well

Replaced my stock tamper from Breville Barista Express and noticed the difference right away: flat even puck surface, improved flow. Though I am new to home espresso, happen to have a fairly steady hand pressure. Still, getting a calibrated one helped to improve shot to shot consistency. May get a regular one at some point in a future, as I tend to tilt it a bit when the spring is engaged and the tamper is a tad less stable vertically. But until my muscle memory is perfect, this one is the way to go for me.Haven't tried those costing upwards from $150, so don't know if there is such a difference in performance. But then, TMO, we are talking $10K car with $5K rims on it. Unless I am buying a pro espresso machine along with a pro grinder, don't think it's justified for me: likely, diminishing return for the money spent. Also, want to mention: my first tamper came with a small but fairly deep scratch at the bottom edge. Luxhaus customer service responded right away and sent me a replacement in perfect condition - no questions asked! So rest assured, they stand by their products. There is a mention re: workmanship quality of inner parts. I am a pretty picky guy, and mine two came quite well machined inside out including the hex pieces (well, with the exception of that scratch). So, maybe it was a fluke for that customer, or I got lucky... Also, the pressure on both is very consistent in 29.8-31 lbs range when the springs were engaged, but not compressed completely (bathroom scale - so, not precise or scientific). Took at least 10-15 measurements on each of them; hence, the range.

You will not regret it!

I have been looking for a calibrated tamper, and I was tempted to purchase the Espro brand for my machine. I decided to take a gamble on this one because it is much cheaper. If I was not happy, I felt pretty confident Amazon will help me. It is a pretty good tool for making delicious consistent espresso shots. It feels heavy, and the movement feels pretty smooth. I have not examined the insides, but honestly I don't feel like I need to. The base is actually a bit wider then the 53mm tamper that comes with my Breville Infuser. The Breville tamper is not exactly 53mm, it is a bit smaller at about 52.75mm. The LuxHaus comes out at 52.95mm. So it is a bit wider, and that is a good thing. The handle is plastic and feels comfortable in my hand. It also came with a little baggy, but the bag is useless. I highly recommend not to drop this tamper on your foot or on the ground. It is pretty heavy and it will hurt and can damage the tamper. I measured the tamper to see if it does stop around 30 pounds when it bottoms out, and mine stops around 28-29 pounds.Over all I am very happy with my purchase. It will help with your shots to deliver consistency and eliminate the inconsistencies of not tampering your coffee right as long as you distribute the coffee before tampering. Don’t hesitate to buy this tool. It will help in making good shots. I honestly thought I was buying a very cheap tamper, for the price it is very well worth it. Thanks LuxHaus!!

Well made tamper that provides consistent results!

So, I've been using this tamper for a little over a week now and I have to say that it has noticeably improved the consistency of my espresso. I already weighed my beans and ground them fresh, but this was the last piece of the puzzle. Having a consistent force and level tamping base have made the overall quality of my shots improve. The strength is always the same, the crema is dense and full, and the flavor is always spot on (no over/under extraction issues). The results alone speak volumes about the benefit of this tamper, but the craftsmanship is also worth noting. The tamper feels solid and hefty in your hand but not unwieldy or awkward because of it. It's a comfortable size and shape for my hand and I feel like I can consistently place it correctly and level with ease. The spring is stiff (it's supposed to be!) but I have no trouble compressing it to tamp my grounds in the portafilter. It's easy to use and obvious when I've compressed enough. The quality is also top notch. The steel base is flawless and is very precisely turned, cut, and etched. The handle is finely polished with good grip but is not abrasive. The look blends in perfectly with my modern looking machine and contemporary kitchen. I love this tamper and would highly recommend LuxHaus to any friend as I feel the cost/value ratio is perfect!

Your Monday morning self needs this.

This thing is awesome. I didn't even know such a thing existed until I snapped the cheap plastic tamper that came with my Espresso machine, and was forced to buy one. I saw a few heavy steel ones, but when I found out there was something that was essentially a torque wrench for pursuing that elusive perfect cup of espresso, I didn't even hesitate to drop extra cash.I've used it once, and it was hands down, the smoothest and most evenly graded espresso tamp I have ever achieved. There was a uniform 1/2mm headspace around the entire inner circumference of the bowl, with no stray grinds finding their way up onto the lip, which can have an adverse impact on the pressure seal.I noticed immediately that the initial flow was stronger, which means less pressure/volume lost to absorption into the grind, and more flavor making it's way into the cup. I drank said cup without any cream or sugar, just so I could taste the difference, and Holy Mother of God, I had no idea what I was missing.I am now angry at myself for not having used one of these sooner. However, at the same time, I am pleased with this purchase of yet another gadget that makes me feel superior to other coffeephiles. ;)
